Testing Methodology
The standardized process every grill goes through before we publish a review.
The 7-Step Process
Purchase & Assembly
We purchase grills at retail price and document the assembly experience, timing setup and noting any missing hardware or unclear instructions.
Burn-In & Seasoning
Every grill is seasoned and run through an initial burn-in cycle before formal testing, matching manufacturer guidance.
Thermal Mapping
Surface probes map hot spots and temperature consistency across the grates at multiple heat settings.
Multi-Cook Testing
We run each grill through searing, indirect low-and-slow, and (where applicable) smoking cooks — the same protocol every time, regardless of brand.
Build & Durability Inspection
Our engineering lead inspects welds, gauge thickness, hardware quality, and long-term wear points beyond the spec sheet.
Scoring & Write-Up
Each grill is scored across heat retention, temperature control, build quality, ease of assembly, value, and cleaning/maintenance — then written up with both pros and cons.
Annual Re-Review
We revisit and update reviews to account for new model years, pricing changes, and long-term durability data.
Testing Equipment
Every cook is logged with surface thermal probes and multi-point temperature mapping across the grates, letting us quantify heat retention and consistency rather than describe it subjectively. Build and durability inspection covers weld quality, steel gauge thickness, and hardware — the same checklist on every unit, so results are directly comparable across brands.
